Out and About

Branscombe is set in “an area of outstanding natural beauty” with a great deal of the surrounding land and beaches belonging to the National Trust. The lane winds down through the village to the Branscombe Mouth with its unspoilt beach and Coastal Path. This stretch of the coastlines, known as The Jurassic Coast, was made a World Heritage Site at the beginning of 2002.

The lanes in spring are littered with wild daffodils and primroses and wild garlic grows in profusion. A wealth of wildlife inhabits the woods and fields.

The Donkey Sanctuary

There are a variety of walks of all lengths either from the house or a starting point nearby. We will be happy to offer recommendations.

The Church of Saint Winifred is one of the most interesting and architecturally important parish churches in Devon. The building dates from late Norman times with remains of an earlier Saxon building on the same site.

The thatched forge is still working. Opposite is a tea shop in what, until 1987, used to be the bakery. A working mill, just downstream, is open to the public.

On the outskirts of Branscombe is The Donkey Sanctuary

The neaby towns and villages of Sidmouth, Beer, Honiton and Lyme Regis provide a wealth of places to visit. National Trust properties in the area - A la Ronda, Killerton, Knighthayes and Castle Drogo Also in the area are Bicton Gardens, Powderham Castle, Abbotsbury and Forde Abbey.
